The parable of "Becoming as Little Children to Enter the Kingdom of God" is found in Matthew 8.
Matthew 8:3-4
3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
This parable is about humility, service and care for others. If we back up a few verses, we can see that the disciples believe that Jesus has already chosen one of them as the greatest and they ask Him about it.
He uses this parable to teach that child-like, simple faith and sincere obedience is the key to the Kingdom of Heaven. In this day, children were to be seen and not heard. They were seen more of as property so they would definitely obey those above them. They were also not concerned with social status and knew they had to rely on those above them for all their needs.
David Guzik says, "Since the nature of Jesus is like one of these little children, how we treat those who are humble like children shows what we think of the nature of Jesus."
We are only able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven because we come in Jesus' name. We did not earn our salvation; it is ours by grace and through faith. It's important how we treat those who are humble.
Chuck Smith says, "The path to greatness is the path of servanthood. How important that we learn to serve, that we not be looking for ourselves, but we only be looking for our Lord and to exalt Him."
Father, thank you that our salvation is given to us through the name of Jesus. May we be humble and live our lives in service to you and your people, being child-like to gain the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.
