Daniel 3:18 apparel has been trending on my store and on many ecommerce platforms. People are really resonating with this right now. So, let's talk about this beautiful commitment proclaimed by Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
Daniel 3:18 "Even if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
This is a story of faith, courage and divine intervention.
This story takes place during the Babylonian exile, under King Nebuchadnezzar's rule. The King sets up a golden image and commands everyone to worship it when music plays. However, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse, staying true to their faith in God.
Daniel 3:14-18 says,
14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good.[c] But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.[d] 18 But even if He does not, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
Those short words, "Even if..." say so much. They will serve their God in faith. Even if He doesn't deliver them from this fiery furnace, they still believe in God, they still believe in His goodness and trust in His plans for their lives. They're not in a relationship with God for what they can get out of it, they're in it for who he is.
They're then thrown into a blazing furnace. Miraculously, they remain unharmed with a fourth figure appearing in the flames, interpreted as an angel or divine presence. Seeing this, Nebuchadnezzar praises their God and promotes them.
We should aspire to have this "Even If" faith! No matter what comes our way we can trust that our God is good and is for us!
Father, thank you for your sovereignty, love and faithfulness to get us through anything. May we live our lives courageously with "even if" faith. Amen.
