The Parable of the "Straight and Narrow Path" - Luke 13:24 - Bible Study Parables of Jesus

Updated: Oct 5

The parable of the "Straight and Narrow Path" is found in Luke 13:24. It says, "Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able."

In Luke 13:24, Jesus says, “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is teaching about the kingdom of God and the urgency of salvation. The Kingdom of God doesn't just represent Heaven as a place but also represents our transformation when we come to Christ.

The “narrow door” symbolizes the challenging path to salvation and eternal life. This world is full of sin and temptation, so it is not easy to follow the way of Jesus. Jesus is saying that entering this door requires effort, we must strive for it. The Greek word strive is "agonizomai" which means intense effort and struggle.

Jesus’ message here is a call to action, urging people to make a sincere and committed effort to follow Him and live according to God’s will. Salvation is not something to be taken lightly, it will require dedication, determination and perseverance.

Even knowing that this will be difficult, God is so good to us! 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Let this parable be a reminder that the broad way is the way to destruction but the narrow and sometimes difficult to find path of Jesus is the way to life and the kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus, your way is not easy, but we are grateful that your grace is enough for us. When we are tempted to stray from your will, give us strength. May we follow your narrow path all the days of our lives. Amen.

Luke 13:24 "Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able."
