Breastplate of Righteousness - Ephesians 6:14 and Romans 3:22 - Bible Study

Next in the Armor of God series, we will talk about the "Breastplate of Righteousness". Ephesians 6:14 says, "Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness."

The "Breastplate of Righteousness" provides essential protection for the most vital organs. A soldier can't fight without his breastplate and likewise, we can't battle spiritual enemies in our own righteousness. It won't be enough. Only with the righteousness that we receive through faith.

David Guzik explains it best saying, "This is not our own earned righteousness, not a feeling of righteousness, but a righteousness received by faith in Jesus. It gives us a general sense of confidence, an awareness of our standing and position."

Romans 3:22-24 helps us understand this more. It says: 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."

These verses highlight that no one is righteous on their own, and everyone needs God's  grace. Justification—a declaration of righteousness—comes as a gift through faith, not through our own efforts. The passage is a powerful  reminder of the equality of all before God and the boundless mercy offered through Christ.

When we are experiencing spiritual challenges or warfare, we can stand confident that Jesus Christ is supreme and our righteousness is through His work, not our own.

Father, thank you that we don't have to stand in our own righteousness as it would never suffice, but through the righteousness that was given us through faith in your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
