Let's talk more about the "belt of Truth" in our Armor of God series. John 3:21 says,
"But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
This verse is an encouragement to live in a way that reflects God's light and truth. Let's first explore the broader context of the chapter. This is a dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a Pharisee, and he seeks Jesus at night and in secret to understand His teachings.
Jesus speaks to him about being born again explaining that it is a spiritual rebirth and that when it happens, we are given the Holy Spirit. This will help us live by truth. This is the conversation in which Jesus exclaims John 3:16 which says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
Next, Jesus teaches him about the importance of living by the truth. The truth is Jesus Christ. It's the cross, it's the resurrection and everything that defines the Gospel.
In this verse the "light" is a metaphor for the truth. It contrasts those who reject the truth with those who embrace it. Living by the truth means aligning our life with God's principles, openly and honestly. It signifies an authentic life, free from deceit, where actions are transparent and pleasing to God.
Are there places in your heart or life where you aren't living by the promises of God? Are there places in your life that you aren't living in truth and integrity? Are there places in your life and heart that do not align with God's Word and will for you? Reflect on those and ask the Lord to give you the strength to live out His plans for you.
Lord, help us to live our lives in a way that reflects truth. May we carry out your works. Give us strength through your Spirit in the places where we stumble. Amen.
